RESIDENTS in Glasgow have been left terrified today - after a freak flash food submerged their street in two feet of water in less than 20 minutes.

Rain and hailstones were to blame for the sudden flooding in the Cathcart area of Glasgow - which forced residents to run for shelter this afternoon.

Shocking images of the scene show water flowing down the street, as cars attempt to plough through it.

Local resident, James Roberts, 32, said: "I thought my car was going to wash away. The water was coming up to my door. It must have been two feet of rain falling in 20 minutes.

"It came out of nowhere. The rain was so heavy and the whole street was flooded. People were not able to cross the road. The postman even got stuck.

"The water was gushing out of the sewers and bubbling away. You can't imagine it was only that area that was hit."

Meanwhile, spokesman for the Met Office said: "There has been a reasonable amount of rainfall in and around Glasgow. There was 13mm of rainfall recorded at our gauge in the Bishopton area by the afternoon.

"We had the remnants of a front which has been developing and passing over south-west Scotland, causing prolonged amounts of rainfall."
