AN Academy Award is the most coveted gong in the film industry.
But despite the glitz, glamour and prestige surrounding the accolade, the Oscar statue itself is worth a surprisingly little amount. Here's the lowdown...

What is an Oscars statuette?
The statuettes are the trophies given to the winners of the Academy Awards.
The 24-karat gold-plated award costs £321 ($400) to make, according to Entertainment Weekly, are 13.5 inches tall, and weigh 8.5lb.
Making 50 statuettes for the awards takes three months, but the Academy don't know how many will be handed out on the night, due to the possibility of ties, or multiple winners in one category.
Any leftover awards are kept in the Academy's vault into the following year.

How much are they actually worth?
While it may seem crazy that the winners would ever part with their trophies, they would be set to make less than a pound if they did.
This is because in 1950 a court ruled that anyone who tries to sell or auction off their award must first offer it to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science for 80p ($1).
Before the ruling came into place the gongs sold for eye-watering sums of money.
In 1999 Michael Jackson purchased the 1939 Academy Award for Best Picture, given to the producers, of ‘Gone With The Wind’ for £1,237,50 ($1,542,000).

Spielberg then donated the trophies back to the Academy.
