A MUM collapsed and died after choking on a marshmallow during an eating contest, witnesses have said.

The 37-year-old tragically dropped to the ground in front of horrified onlookers at Beddau Rugby Football Club, as the masses tried to save her.

Emergency services were raced to the packed clubrooms on Saturday night, but devastatingly the mum could not be saved.

The club had advertised showing Rugby World Cup matches, as well as having a singer performing on the night of her death.

During the evening a marshmallow challenge was said to have kicked off, giving contestants 60 seconds to see how many sweets they could swallow.

Witnesses said the mum is feared to have choked after taking part in the event, but her loved ones are still waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination.

One onlooker said the crowd had been cheering for the mum amid the challenge before she suddenly collapsed.

She recalled: "One minute everyone was enjoying themselves and whooping, the next she was on the floor.

"It was dreadful to watch it happen in front of you."

A club spokesperson described what happened as a "tragic accident".

They would not confirm what part the mum had taken in the marshmallow challenge, and nor who organised the contest.

On Sunday they posted on social media: "Our club will be shut today and will reopen tomorrow at 3pm."

The post garnered hundreds of condolences, with well wishes for the woman's loved ones.

Beddau RFC today said the club and community were "heartbroken" following the mum's tragic death.

In a statement, the club said: "On Saturday night we lost a very dear friend who will be sadly missed.

"Everybody associated with Beddau RFC and within the community are nothing less than devastated at the weekend's tragic accident and we struggle to comprehend the sense of loss people are feeling.

"This said, we must acknowledge that our loss pales into insignificance in comparison to the loss of a lady who was a wonderful wife, mother and daughter to what was an absolutely tragic turn of events.

"As a club we send out our sincerest, heartfelt condolences to all the family, the close friends and to all those that this has so badly impacted - you are all in our thoughts today."

South Wales Police said it was continuing to probe the sudden death.

The force said: "At approximately 11pm on Saturday 7 October emergency services were called Beddau Rugby Club where a 37-year-old woman collapsed and died.

"HM Coroner has been informed and enquiries into the circumstances of the death are continuing."

The Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 10.10pm on Saturday to a medical emergency at Beddau Rugby Club.

"We sent two emergency ambulances to the scene, where crews were also supported by Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service colleagues.”
